As the Managing Director of Prints Publications, I attended the Sharjah International Booksellers Conference 2024. This gathering provided invaluable insights into the ever-evolving world of publishing and bookselling. Held from April 27th to April 28th in the United Arab Emirates, this conference served as a melting pot of ideas, experiences, and innovations, paving the way for collaborative ventures and future endeavours in the literary domain.
The conference commenced with an inspiring keynote address by Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority. She emphasised the importance of collaboration in navigating the challenges posed by rapid technological shifts and changing consumer preferences. She highlighted the significance of diversity in driving innovation and fostering growth within the global publishing industry, urging attendees to embrace new opportunities and forge meaningful connections across borders.
Over 550 booksellers and publishing professionals from 76 countries attended the conference, which provided a platform for dialogue and collaboration on a global scale. The packed agenda featured keynote speeches, educational workshops, and networking opportunities aimed at sharing best practices and fostering business relationships.
One of the conference’s highlights was a keynote interview with Andrea Giunti, executive vice president of Giunti al Punto bookstores and Giunti Editore S.P.A., Italy’s most significant chain and one of its largest publishing houses, respectively. Giunti shared insights into the company’s innovative approach to bookselling, emphasising the importance of customer experience and community engagement in driving sales and fostering a love for reading.
Throughout the conference, participants engaged in roundtable discussions led by booksellers worldwide, covering various topics, including curation, marketing, and working with literary festivals. These sessions provided a forum for sharing experiences and exchanging ideas, highlighting the diverse perspectives and approaches within the global bookselling community.
As the conference drew to a close, it was evident that the spirit of collaboration and innovation that permeated the event would continue to shape the publishing industry’s future. The Sharjah International Booksellers Conference 2024 served as a testament to the enduring power of books and the collective efforts of individuals and organisations committed to promoting literacy and culture on a global scale.
In conclusion, my experience at the Sharjah International Booksellers Conference 2024 was enlightening and inspiring. I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in such a dynamic and thought-provoking event. I look forward to applying the insights gained to our ongoing efforts at Prints Publications.
